About the Company

Origin is a forensic investigation firm specializing in post-loss investigations in fire and electrical, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, materials, metallurgy and chemistry. Our multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists and technologists examines incidents objectively, working closely with all stakeholders to establish the facts, determine causes and set out clear, evidence-based conclusions that make informed technical, legal and insurance decisions possible.

Our mission is simple: bring clarity to complex situations through rigorous, independent scientific expertise.

Primary Role

The role of the fire engineer is to conduct technical investigations—through a meticulous scientific analysis of the damage and any elements remaining after a fire or explosion—in order to determine the origin and cause.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveys and observations to determine the cause of fires involving buildings (residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural) or equipment;
  • Perform laboratory tests, analyses, examinations, and simulations to verify explanatory hypotheses;
  • Explain the process leading to their conclusions in clear, accessible terms, communicating findings both verbally and in writing;
  • Travel throughout Quebec (and occasionally outside the province) to examine fire scenes;
  • Serve as an expert witness in court proceedings when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering;
  • Member of a professional order in Quebec;
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required;
  • Strong French communication skills (both oral and written);
  • Aptitude for and interest in technical and hands-on work;
  • Ability to participate in promotional activities and maintain the company’s professional network;
  • Availability for training in Canada and the United States, as well as for technical knowledge sharing among experts;
  • Good command of spoken and written English (an asset).

Required Skills

  • Strong analytical, synthesis, and scientific skills;
  • Excellent communication and ability to explain complex concepts clearly (oral and written);
  • Ability to plan and organize work based on priorities;
  • Autonomy, initiative, and attention to detail;
  • Customer-service orientation;
  • Business management and development skills;
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for work-related travel, with sufficient storage space to transport specimens and technical equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Permanent position: 35 hours per week – remote work option available;
  • Work location: Sherbrooke;
  • Compensation based on relevant experience, candidate profile, and company salary policy;
  • 4 weeks of vacation plus time off during the holiday season;
  • Overtime pay at a premium rate;
  • Performance-based bonuses;
  • Group insurance plans and a Voluntary Retirement Savings Plan (VRSP) with employer contribution;
  • Work clothing provided;
  • Company events;
  • Young, dynamic, collaborative, and evolving work environment;
  • On-site gym facilities;
  • Free on-site parking.

* Please note that the masculine form is used in this posting for the sake of brevity; however, this position is open to both men and women.
